The weather here is much different than in Wisconsin. In summer, a hot day is 85 degrees, and in winter a cold day is 25 degrees, and there people are wearing huge jackets and scarfs, and I could easily be in shorts. During christmas we had no snow, and up to that point we had only had touches of frost on the ground. On my birthday (YAY!) I was given a present of snow by mother nature. Although it only lasted for 2 hours, my entire centimeter of snow was fun. After a few other days where it snowed a centimeter and then melted, I finally got a day last week where there was enough to cover up the grass! We woke up saturday morning, looked out the window, and everything was white. Although it isn't like NY, it was enough to satasify me.
Saturday I went to a friends house, and we decided it would be fun to build a snowman. Because it was only slighly below freezing, the snow was not dry frozen snow like we always get, but instead amazing packing snow. It was barely any work packing the snow into a nice ball (some for the snowman, most for snowballs) and effortlessly growing a huge ball. After getting a modestly sized bottom, it was time to do the other two. When ready to lift the 2nd ball onto the first, we counted down, drei...twei...eins, and the ball didn't even budge... With our high expectations for our snowman we didn't easily give up, but eventually had to resort to the muscle power of Dad, haha. With all three of us working together we were able to hoist the ball on top of the other. Being the nieve children we are, we told him we could lift the head, but little did we know, we couldn't even do that much. We were able to lift it up to our chest height, but when it came to over our heads, it just didn't work. The muscle man came back laughing at our effort, and graciously lifted it by himself and placed our final part. After 15 minutes of adding finishing touches and finding eyes, arms, and a mouth, we were finally finished with our 'Riesen Schneemann' or giant snowman.
Expecting the worse from our northern Germany weather, we said goodbye to him, thinking he would not be able to last the night. To our suprise, the next morning he was still together, besides the carrot and his eyes. Sadly, the same can not be said about the next morning, but that's ok. After the 2nd night, all that remained was a decently sized bottom ball, a small soccerball size middle ball, and a carrot where his head once laid.
That concludes the story of 'Snowy der Schneemann!' Tchüss!
